Here you can learn how the ongoing movements of planets — known as transits — and their periods of apparent backward motion — known as retrogrades — affect our lives.
What are Transits?
Transits are the continuous movements of planets as they travel through the zodiac. As planets move, they form aspects to the positions of planets in your natal chart, activating specific energies and themes. Transits can bring about significant changes, opportunities, and challenges, providing insights into the timing of events in your life.
Types of Transits
- Personal Transits: These involve the faster-moving planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) and typically influence day-to-day experiences and short-term events.
- Outer Planet Transits: These involve the slower-moving planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) and have longer-lasting effects, often bringing about significant life changes and long-term growth.
Understanding Transits
- Harmonious Transits: When a transiting planet forms a positive aspect (such as a trine or sextile) with a natal planet, it typically brings ease, opportunities, and support in the areas of life governed by the planets involved.
- Challenging Transits: When a transiting planet forms a challenging aspect (such as a square or opposition) with a natal planet, it often brings tension, obstacles, and the need for adjustment and growth in the areas of life affected.
What are Retrogrades?
Retrogrades occur when a planet appears to move backward in its orbit from our perspective on Earth. This optical illusion is caused by the relative positions and motions of Earth and the other planets. During retrograde periods, the energies of the planet in question are often felt more intensely and can bring about introspection, delays, and revisions.
Key Retrogrades and Their Meanings
Mercury Retrograde
Perhaps the most well-known retrograde, Mercury retrograde occurs about three to four times a year for approximately three weeks. It is associated with communication breakdowns, travel delays, and the need to revisit and revise plans.
Venus Retrograde
Occurring approximately every 18 months, Venus retrograde lasts about six weeks and affects relationships, finances, and values. It is a time for reevaluating connections and reassessing what you value in life.
Mars Retrograde
Happening roughly every two years, Mars retrograde lasts for about two and a half months. It influences action, motivation, and assertiveness, often leading to frustrations and the need to reconsider how you pursue your goals.
Jupiter Retrograde
Occurs once a year for about four months. It prompts reflection on growth, beliefs, and long-term goals, encouraging a review of your aspirations and philosophies.
Saturn Retrograde
Lasts about four and a half months each year. It affects structures, responsibilities, and discipline, requiring you to reassess commitments and long-term plans.
Uranus Retrograde
Occurs for about five months each year. It brings unexpected changes, innovation, and a need to break free from old patterns. It prompts introspection on areas where you seek freedom and authenticity.
Neptune Retrograde
Lasts about five months each year. It influences dreams, illusions, and spiritual insights, encouraging you to delve into your subconscious and reassess your beliefs and visions.
Pluto Retrograde
Occurs for about five to six months each year. It brings deep transformation, power struggles, and the need to confront hidden issues and undergo personal regeneration.
